International Workers' Memorial Day

International Workers Memorial Day (IWMD) on 28 April, commemorates all those who die across the world each year, through their work.

On this day we "remember the dead, and fight for the living" by focusing our campaigns and demands for safe and healthy work to protect the living.

In the UK alone, up to 50,000 people die each year through their work, mostly from work-related illnesses. Read more about that.

We must remember not only those UNISON members who die through their work, but also the many who suffer injuries and work related ill health. This affects not only the workers, but also their families and the wider community through pain and suffering, loss of income, reduced job prospects, lower productivity, and less spending.
