Stand Up for Labour - 29th October 2015

Our second Stand up for Labour® event at Keele promises a great night out for Labour Party and Trade Union members and supporters. It combines the best in comedy with inspiring speeches from leading Party figures and trade unionists, and is an opportunity for local activists to rally together and raise funds in the process.

As well as three great acts this year we are fortunate to have Roger McKenzie as our guest speaker.

Roger McKenzie (Unison)

Roger was appointed as an Assistant General Secretary of UNISON with responsibility for organising and recruitment in December 2010. Prior to that Roger was the West Midlands Regional Secretary of UNISON. Roger was also the regional secretary of the Midlands TUC for the 4 years up to 2008. Roger is the first black person to have held any of these roles.

Roger has extensive experience of working in the trade union movement at local, regional, national and international levels. He has also advised trade unionists, politicians and business leaders on employment related issues, especially on equality matters and in recognition of his work on equality Roger was awarded an OBE.

Grainne Maguire

An exceptional comedy talent with a terrific comedic intelligence and stunning surrealism Grainne Maguire has appeared on Comedy Central’s ‘Stewart Lee’s Alternative Comedy Experience”, RTE’s “The Year That’s In It”,  BBC 3′s Free Speech, Radio 5 Live’s “Seven Day Sunday” & “Hit List”, Radio 4’s “The Now Show” “Stephen K  Amos’ An Idiots Guide” “Front Row” and “Women’s Hour”.

Johnny Pelham

Multiple award-nominated rising star Jonny Pelham made his comedy debut in 2012 and was runner-up in the prestigious So You Think You're Funny? and Chortle Student Comedian of the Year competitions. Last year he was nominated as best newcomer in the Chortle Awards 2014 and this year was the Judges' Choice in the BBC Radio New Comedy Awards.

When he was 16 the NHS asked Jonny Pelham if he wanted cosmetic surgery to improve his appearance. Having been happy with how he looked this came as a shock. He has already received a wave of critical acclaim, with the Evening Standard's Bruce Dessau saying 'Jonny Pelham has a big future' whilst Chortle's Steve Bennett said 'the laughs are explosive.

Andy White

Andy White is an energetic, confident and silly Brummie who combines silly voices and a mad afro to devastating comic effect. Andy has numerous media appearances, including the BBC New Comedy Awards on BBC Choice, Brand Spanking New on BBC Radio and his winning performance on the Weakest Link comedian’s special.
